F1 Closed Cockpit Rejected In 2012

News has come out that a potential ‘protective roll bar’ structure was suggested by the FIA in 2012, as something to look into and research further. The structure would be in front of the driver cockpit on a Formula 1 car, and would try and prevent serious injury when debris or vehicle collisions occur head on. The website Autosport discovered that after a meeting with leading team officials and Bernie Ecclestone, the decision was taken not sink funds into further research and development, as the prospective designs were just too ‘ugly’. The structure may not have been able to do anything in regards to Jules Bianchi’s recent crash, but the current climate will surely bring the subject into the limelight again.
